Social networking

Hmmm.
Facebook seems like a nice way to find those friends that have moved overseas or married. In the library context, social networking looks good for big events like conferences. Or perhaps as a way to keep up to date on org change without bogging down the email inbox. So you could have a page for each subject in a faculty, students then can join and keep up to date with changes to timetabling, meet people to study with, give feedback.
I have to agree with the user review of UQ's facebook "search the catalogue" app - it would have been easier to just go to the UQ library page-catalogue. When you've got a limited budget, how to spend it for best return?
Is it a function of my age that I'd prefer to have a few really relevent tools to use? Is a desire for a relatively simple interface for an institution going to limit what services are offerred? Do people who go online to chat with friends then take that into their study? Personally, I am a little skeptical. Professionally, I can see I have a lot to learn, so shall try to withhold final judgement.
